Chapter 17
Aaron was having a fucking bad day.
Thanks to a busted water pipe, the flooring had gotten messed up in one of the homes the pack was working on, and the client had been furious. The paunchy older man had spent all morning screaming in Aaron's face, which was pretty damn hard to take.
Usually, even humans responded to Aaron's natural intimidation, and in those rare times when the humans were too oblivious to sense the grave error they were making, Aaron's pack took over. But this guy kept demanding to speak with whatever moron was in charge. As if Aaron was personally responsible for a sub-zero cold wave. They'd wrapped the damn pipes, but when temperatures dipped into negative numbers, new homes were vulnerable. It had taken all of his control not to bite the guy.
Now, all Aaron wanted was to get home and have an hour of peace and quiet before he had to redo the week's schedules to accommodate putting in a new floor. Instead, as soon as he walked in, he tripped, sprawling onto his living room rug and dropping the blueprints he'd been carrying.
Fuck. He'd tripped? Since when did an Alpha trip?
Maybe since his entire house had been taken over by glittering costumes, CDs, skate guards, training equipment, empty coffee cups, performance sketches, and … teddy bears. Yes. Teddy bears. For the past month, he'd been living in a sea of sequins and stuffed animals. They came in every week by the bag load, sent by Devon's fans from around the world, and now Aaron was going to rip them to shreds with his fangs because damn it, that's what Alphas did to small, helpless fluffy objects.
"Goddamn, freakin' …"
"Hi, Aaron."
Oh great. More people.
He'd scented them when he first pulled in, but since one of them was Devon's manager, who'd practically taken up residence in Aaron's living room since Devon's return to competitive skating, and none of them were shifters, he wasn't worried. Still, Aaron hated that he was becoming immune to the presence of random humans in his territory.
"Hi Sarah," he said, standing up and glaring at the bear who'd tripped him. Three more people emerged from the kitchen, and Aaron cocked an eyebrow in their direction. "And these people are …?"
"They represent The Sandwich Barn. We're meeting with Devon so they can pitch an idea for his Comeback Campaign." Sarah spread her arms wide, indicating an imaginary marquee. "Come back to The Sandwich Barn." She grinned. "Catchy, isn't it? You know, come back because Devon's making a comeback? Get it?"
That was the stupidest slogan Aaron had ever heard, but he wasn't going to say that, so he nodded.
"You remember Devon's publicist, Tamika?"
A woman with a tight black weave waved at him. Far too perky.
"Right." Aaron nodded again even though he could never remember the difference between a manager and a publicist. Why was it that Devon needed both of them?
A man came out of the kitchen eating one of Aaron's power bars. He stopped when he saw Aaron, looking guilty with his cheeks puffed out.
